Doctors wanted to have negotiations with the government - OPEN AND FREE negotiations. But, this is not what the government offered - the government required the BMA to accept certain pre-conditions before starting negotiations. These included the points on patient safety that doctors are most concerned about. This is incredibly unfair and do not allow for the BMA to make substantial changes to the proposals.
Meetings between junior doctors and NHS England representatives were cancelled just 4 hours before they were due to start, despite many junior doctors swapping shifts and giving up annual leave days to attend. Even now, Jeremy Hunt has agreed only to meet the head of the Junior Doctors Committee for "talks" (rather than involving all elected representatives). These events have led doctors to worry that the government is not willing to listen to their concerns.
